GIMP / OpenShot / Mixxx / Overwitch Weekly recap — 29 December 2024

Week highlights: the second release candidate of GIMP 3.0 is out, and so are the new stable releases of OpenShot, Mixxx, Overwitch.

GIMP 3.0rc2

The new release candidate is finally out, mainly with bugfixes:

  • v2.10 settings are now properly migrated.
  • The console window on Windows is now gone.
  • The missing font issue has been fixed for macOS.
  • darktable integration has been restored.

There are two more important changes:

  • A new GEGL Filter API was added to help developers port their plugins to v3.0.
  • Some blending modes now have perceptual space assigned by default to work as expected.

Builds are available for downloading (AppImage is included).

See here for more information about the release.

OpenShot 3.3.0

Jonathan Thomas released the new version of OpenShot with some really useful improvements:

  • Various ripple editing improvements (long, long overdue).
  • Recovery feature for loading previous (timestamped) project versions.
  • Improved zoom precision, frame boundary banding, and seamless navigation along the timeline for the zoom slider.
  • Full copy/paste overhaul for effects and timeline elements.
  • Faster timeline updates on large projects and batch operations.
  • Multi-drag and drop support on the timeline.

See here for the full list of changes and downloads.

Please note that users have been complaining about bugs and the lagging behavior of the new version for a while. So maybe stay put for now and wait for 3.3.1.

Mixxx 2.5

The new version of the free and open-source DJ software was released just in time for the winter holidays. Evelynne Veys did one hell of a job making the release notes all sparkly and christmassy.

Here are some release highlights:

  • Qt6 port (for all you nerds who want the dirty details).
  • The last BPM/beats change can now be undone.
  • Compressor and Glitch effects have been added.
  • The macOS version now supports Audio Unit effects.
  • The library got some nice updates.
  • Waveforms are now smoother thanks to GL ES support.
  • Improved support for Denon MC7000, Numark Scratch, Pioneer DDJ-FLX4, Traktor Kontrol S4 MK3, and MIDI for light.

You can download the new version of Mixxx here.

OverWitch 2.0

This took a little longer than I expected, but a new version of Overwitch is out. It’s a convenient little application for connecting various Overbridge devices via JACK/PipeWire.

Overwitch 2

In fact, there are two releases: v1.1.1 is GTK3-based and v2.0 is GTK4-based. All the other changes are the same:

  • Support for Overbridge 2.13 devices with class compliant USB MIDI
  • Improved PipeWire support
  • Improved audio and latency
  • Fixed tuning time at 5s
  • USB hotplug support

Meanwhile, dagargo added support for Digitone II to Elektroid, his other application that helps upload presets, samples etc. to Elektron, Arturia, and Novation synths and beatboxes. No new releases yet, though, as work on Machinedrum support and the GTK4 port is still ongoing.
